A gripping, sophisticated drama about one man pushed to the edge in his drive to save his ailing son, The Trap is a white-knuckle descent into the tough ethical choices of contemporary Belgrade.

Mladen (Nebojša Glogovac) leads a happy existence with his loving wife, Marija (Nataša Ninković), and a beautiful young son, Nemanja (Marko Durović). He is an average man making as good a living as can be expected in the present-day Balkans. Then, completely out of the blue, Nemanja is struck down by a severe seizure and must have an operation as soon as possible. However, the surgery costs twenty-six thousand Euros and is only available in Germany. The couple has no property to sell, and a politely cruel banker denies Mladen a loan. Desperate, Marija puts an ad in the newspaper pleading for financial assistance for Nemanja, which shames both husband and son.

There seems to be no hope on the horizon. A few days later, the phone rings, and a man’s voice on the other end requests a meeting with Mladen at a hotel. He will give Mladen more than enough money for the operation if Mladen will kill the mystery man’s business rival, the wealthy owner of a trading company whom he describes as an enemy of the nation. Mladen is understandably horrified by the ghastly proposition, but he cannot get the offer – or his looming guilt about passing up Nemanja’s only chance for survival – out of his head. The man persists and, with instructions and cash to follow, gives Mladen a gun – now all he has to do to save his son’s life is use it. But why should he trust his new puppet master?

While there’s only one trap in the title, the script throws up innumerable snares to turn up the pressure on its thoroughly compelling protagonist. The close-knit family, suddenly confronted by their own vulnerability, must wrestle with a difficult question: Could taking a guilty life to save an innocent one ever be a defensible act? Beautifully stylized by director Srdan Golubović, who presents a slightly askew version of a war-wounded Serbia, The Trap unflinchingly dissects a family brought to the breaking point by the suffering of their child.
