From the creators of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), this series is set after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). After the sacrifices of Dr. Miles Dyson and T-800 Model 101 Terminator, the Connors find themselves once again being stalked by Skynet's agents from the future. Realizing their nightmare isn't over, they decide to stop running and focus on preventing the birth of Skynet. With the aid of Cameron Phillips, a beautiful girl who has a mysterious past also linked to the future, they begin a quest stop the United States military from creating the program that will bring humanity to an end.

Prompted by the return of Terminators into their lives, Sarah and John decide to stop running, and focus on stopping the creation of Skynet. They are aided by Cameron, a Terminator who poses as a female student at John's school, and whose mission is to protect John. Meanwhile, FBI Agent James Ellison pursues Sarah and John with the belief that Sarah is deranged.

An advance script review by TV Squad revealed that time travel would play a major role in the series premiere, including a temporal leap for the main characters from 1999 to 2007.[24] The pilot episode as broadcast takes place in August and September 1999 with a jump to September 2007. Three video clips from the series premiere published on the IGN website included Cromartie, the enemy Terminator, using Sarah's voice over the phone to find John, Sarah and John fighting over their current situation, and Cromartie looking for John, Sarah, and Cameron at the Dyson residence.

Ep 1 of 9: Pilot: After two years in one spot Sarah Connor feels the need to move on before they get too comfortable. They move to a new city where John starts school and meets a mysterious girl.

Ep 2 of 9: Gnothi Seauton: Sarah contacts an old friend to acquire new aliases for her and John.

Ep 3 of 9: The Turk: Sarah visits Miles Dyson's widow to find the creator of Skynet. She leads her to a man named Andy Goode who used to work with Dyson and is building a chess-playing computer named "The Turk." John and Cameron try their best to fit in on their first day at a new high school.

Ep 4 of 9: Heavy Metal: While searching for some stolen cargo, John becomes separated from Sarah and Cameron. Meanwhile, Agent Ellison's murder investigation leads him to a surprising suspect.

Ep 5 of 9: Queen's Gambit: Sarah reevaluates the capabilities of her friend Andy's computer after he enters it in a chess competition. During the competition Sarah meets a stranger with a history similar to hers. Meanwhile, Agent Ellison finds remnants from a past terminator battle.

Ep 6 of 9: Dungeons & Dragons: Flashing in and out of consciousness, fighting for his life, the Stranger from last week recalls his future life battling the machines in 2027. Meanwhile, Sarah tries to explain the past to Charlie.

Ep 7 of 9: The Demon Hand: Sarah breaks into Agent Ellison's apartment and discovers a file on her from her time at the mental hospital, leading her to Dr. Silberman, a doomsday convert. Meanwhile Cameron signs up for a ballet class and John finds out why his mom escaped the mental hospital.

Ep 8 of 9: Vick's Chip (1): Derek finds the brain chip from Vick that Cameron had kept. John builds an interface for it and they discover a computerized traffic system is important to Skynet. Sarah decides it must be sabotaged. Meanwhile, Cromartie is checking through school records in search of John.

Ep 9 of 9: What He Beheld (2): Sarah finds herself in a business transaction with a mysterious business man. Meanwhile, Cromartie closes in on John and Agent Ellison discovers a nemesis at the agency.
